Portugal owns two green Atlantic archipelagos, and they attract the same kind of traveller: walkers, garden lovers, people who want scenery with their mild weather. But Madeira and the Azores (represented here by São Miguel, the largest island) deliver that greenery in very different ways.
Head to head
| Category | Madeira | São Miguel (Azores) |
|---|---|---|
| Landscape | Steep ridges, levadas, dramatic cliffs | Rolling green craters, lakes, pastures |
| Weather | Milder and more settled, esp. the south | More changeable; four seasons in a day is real |
| Walking | The levada network — Madeira’s signature | Crater-rim and lakeside trails, quieter |
| Signature experiences | Funchal, gardens, Porto Moniz pools | Furnas hot springs, Sete Cidades, tea fields |
| Getting there | More direct flights from Europe | Fewer routes; often via Lisbon |
| Feel | Polished, established, garden-island | Rural, wilder, slow-travel |
| Base | Funchal works for almost everyone | Ponta Delgada, or split with Furnas |
Choose Madeira if…
You want the surer thing: easier flights, milder and more predictable weather, a charming capital as your base, and one of Europe’s great walking networks. Madeira is the better first green-island trip, and the better winter trip.
Choose São Miguel if…
You want the wilder, quieter version: crater lakes instead of ridges, hot springs instead of gardens, and roads you mostly have to yourself. Go in summer for the best odds on the famous viewpoints, and embrace the weather as part of the island’s character.
